About the group
- This group is an opportunity for all farmers, from those wanting to set up a lifetime farm plan for their farm and those starting out on their farming career to understand your farm resources and build your own farm plan together with other farmers and experts. This is a collaborative group from NZ Landcare Trust (Tasman) and Alan McDermott (AgriFood Strategy). Supported by B+LNZ and the farmer council, as well as other local support agencies
- Over 12 months this group will meet 4 to 5 times. The group will be limited to 8-10 businesses (and ideally two people from each business where possible) who will work together to learn, share and take action to create their own farm plan for their farms that are fit for purpose.
- This Tasman Farm Planning Group will support you to understand the farm planning process, identify risks and issues at the catchment level and opportunities which would create the greatest value. The farm planning content will be directed by you and may include areas such soils, biosecurity, resource mapping, farm mapping, biodiversity, good environmental practise and adverse events planning.
- You will leave this group having been to a series of workshops on specific topics that will help understand your farm resources and create the documentation and processes most suitable for your business to create a farm plan.
Quotes from past farm planning group members
“We’re now using the farm plan information more critically than ever before – utilisation of the information is more important”
“Finding it particularly interesting and informative. The more we learn and record and map will give us the knowledge to change our way of farming, to implement new ways of managing our natural resources. Takes time to build your knowledge”.
“Enabled me to get the big picture. Allowed me to focus on priorities which is good. Allows for a stronger business decision making process. Supported us to be up with the play.”
“We are creating something we can be proud of”
“Getting into it now will be easier than trying to do in 5 year’s time, much easier not going into it blind.”
