B+LNZ Central Otago Farming for Profit – carbon sequestration

Learn about the opportunities for sheep and beef farmers to sequester carbon on farm, including the types of vegetation could be included as an offset to your farm emissions, and how this differs between the ETS and the options currently being put forward by He Waka Eke Noa.

Specific examples of vegetation suitable for carbon sequestration in Central Otago will be provided.

Speakers

  • Erica Van Reenan (AgFirst, He Waka Eke Noa) – As well as her role as a farmer and agricultural consultant, Erica has been leading the sequestration workstream for He Waka Eke Noa (HWEN).  She has an in-depth knowledge of the sequestration options being put forward by HWEN, as well as practical insight into the opportunities for sequestration on sheep and beef farms.
  • David Norton (University of Canterbury) – David is a recently retired Professor of University of Canterbury, with specialties including exotic forestry, conservation and ecology.  He has a wealth of experience working with farmers to develop ecological plans for their properties and has a very good working knowledge of species (both native and exotic) that will grow in Central Otago environments.
