M. bovis programme changes
From 1 January 2025, the Mycoplasma bovis (M. bovis) programme becomes the full responsibility of OSPRI, under a National Pest Management Plan (NPMP). An NPMP is a regulatory approach that enables an agency, like OSPRI, to manage and eradicate disease. The programme is making great strides towards being able to declare the country free from the disease. New Zealand is currently at zero confirmed cases of infection. We’re now entering a phase of the eradication effort where programme work will centre on surveillance to prove M. bovis is absent, rather than working to contain it. Several years of surveillance and zero confirmed infection is needed to provide confidence that M. bovis is absent on New Zealand farms.
